When the folks of a small town meet at the dance hall, fun is sure to ensue.
Dance, Y'all Dance by Kelly Bennett is a wonderfully fun and funny picture book. Come spend a Saturday night at the Horseshoe where young, old, great dancers and not all take a twirl on the shiny dance floor. This tale is written in rhyme and flows along as perfectly as the...four turns and fast hands of Pistachio.
The illustrations by Terri Murphy are a perfect accompaniment to this delightful story - they're bright, bold and tell a whole story themselves!
Check out, Dance, Y'all, Dance on Kelly Bennett's web site, Amazon or Barnes & Noble
This is a must have for any youngster's bookshelf =)

How Parents Can Help Their Kids Overcome Obestiy
by Dr. Dolgoff
The U.S. National Library of Medicine estimates that at least one out of five children in the U.S. is overweight. There are several reasons why parents need be concerned over an overweight or obese child. Obese children and adolescents have shown an alarming increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes. Many obese children have high cholesterol and blood pressure levels, which are risk factors for heart disease. One of the most severe problems for obese children is sleep apnea (interrupted breathing while sleeping). In some cases this can lead to problems with learning and memory. In addition, obese children have a high incidence of orthopedic problems, liver disease, and asthma.
How to determine if your child is overweight or obese:
A doctor is the best person to determine whether your child has a weight problem. Doctors will measure your child’s weight, height, age and growth patterns to determine if his or her weight is within a healthy range. Based on your child’s height and weight, they will calculate a body mass index (BMI). If your child’s BMI is greater than 95 percent of children their age and gender, they are considered to be overweight.
Why children become overweight:
Genetic factors: Children become overweight for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. In rare cases, a medical problem, such as an endocrine disorder, may cause a child to become overweight. A careful physical exam and some blood tests will determine if your child is overweight due to this type of problem.
Children whose parents or brothers or sisters are overweight may be at an increased risk of becoming overweight themselves. However, not all children with a family history of obesity will be overweight. Genetic factors play a role in increasing the likelihood that a child will be overweight, but shared family behaviors such as eating and activity habits also greatly influence body weight.
Lifestyle: A child’s total diet and his or her activity level both play an important role in determining a child’s weight. The average American child spends approximately 24 hours each week watching television - time that could be spent in some sort of physical activity.
What parents can do to help:
Be supportive: Overweight children need support, acceptance, and encouragement from their parents. Children’s feelings about themselves often are based on their parents’ feelings about them. It is also important to talk to your children about weight, allowing them to share their concerns with you.
Don't use food as a punishment or reward: Withholding food as a punishment may lead children to worry that they will not get enough food which may result in overeating. When foods, such as sweets, are used as a reward, children may assume that these foods are better or more valuable than other foods. For example, telling children that they will get dessert if they eat all of their vegetables sends the wrong message about vegetables.
Set a good example: Children are good learners, and they learn best by example. Set a good example for your kids by eating a variety of foods and being physically active. Involve children in food shopping and preparing. Children may be more willing to eat or try foods that they help prepare.
Teach healthy habits: Teaching healthy eating practices early will help children approach eating with the right attitude: Food should be enjoyed and is necessary for growth, development, and for energy to keep the body running. Guide their choices rather than dictate foods. This will help your children learn how to make healthy food choices. Encourage your child to eat slowly. A child can detect hunger and fullness better when eating slowly.
Cut down on fat: Reducing fat is a good way to cut calories without depriving your child of nutrients. Simple ways to cut the fat in your family’s diet include eating lowfat or nonfat dairy products, poultry without skin and lean meats, and low-fat or fat-free breads and cereals. By the time the child is about 5 years old, you should gradually adopt a diet that contains no more than 30 percent of calories from fat.
Healthy snacking: You should make snacks as nutritious as possible, without depriving your child of occasional chips or cookies, especially at parties or other social events. Healthy snacks include: applesauce, carrot sticks with hummus, peanut butter on apples, yogurt, dried fruit, fruit juice popsicles, low fat cheese, etc.
Increase your physical activity: Regular physical activity, combined with healthy eating habits, is the most efficient and healthful way to control your weight. Some simple ways to increase your family’s physical activity include the following: Plan family activities like walking, dancing, biking, or swimming. For example, schedule a walk with your family after dinner instead of watching TV or playing video games. Overweight children may feel uncomfortable about participating in certain activities so it is important to help your child find physical activities that they enjoy and that aren’t embarrassing or too difficult.

What to do With that Tooth
5 Unexpected Things to Do with Your Kid’s Baby Teeth
The truth most parents aren’t willing to admit is that they likely toss out the baby teeth their kids hide under their pillow for the Tooth Fairy. So the folks at StemSave put together this list of five great things to do with teeth that will keep your kids healthy and happy in the future:
1. Bury your baby's teeth in a time capsule in the backyard. You can add other keepsakes, like a favorite t-shirt, toys, books or photos, so when your children grow up, they can remember those momentous occasions.
2. Make a baby book album with photos and … teeth. In addition to saving the first lock of hair, you can save the first tooth.
3. Get a "First Tooth" kit or porcelain tooth bank. Little girls love putting keepsakes in a jewelry box. Consider doing the same for them with a first tooth kit!
4. Get a Tooth Fairy pillow. These can be personalized for your child, boy or girl, with a discrete place to stash the tooth and a note to the tooth fairy. Just “Google” Tooth Fairy Pillow and you’ll find lots of great sources.
5. Preserve those baby teeth with a private bank where doctors and scientists can save the valuable stem cells from the tooth’s pulp. Many parents don’t realize that stem cells are in baby teeth and that you can store them for future use. It’s also a great second chance for parents who didn’t save their baby’s cord blood.
StemSave is the stem cell company that works with families, doctors and dentists to educate them about the opportunity of recovering stem cells from teeth. Scientists are making countless breakthroughs in stem cell research, doing everything from regenerating bones to muscle and nerve tissue. The implications for medical treatments are endless.

Soup Day
Mmmmm...who doesn't like homemade soup and the wonderful aroma it fills your home with? It's so comforting, especially on a cold winter's day.
Soup Day by Melissa Iwai is a delightful book for toddlers and beginning readers. It takes us on a simple journey from picking out fresh veggies, to the slicing and dicing and tossing them into a big pot. This book is written by the child's point of view helping draw your little one into the story - it feels like you're actually the one making the soup!
I loved this story. The bright illustrations and family-like story is both compelling and fun to read. The illustrations are done in a way that I found myself rubbing the pages to see if the textures were actually real.
In addition, Iwai has also included her recipe for "Snowy Day Vegetable Soup" so you and your little one can act out the process found among the pages.
I would highly recommend Soup Day for you and your family. Check out Soup Day on the web at; http://us.macmillan.com/soupday

The MedeDrive - Halloween Safety
PORTABLE MEDICAL RECORDS MAKE HALLOWEEN SAFETY EASY FOR EMERGENCIES
With the celebration of Halloween soon knocking at our door, parents everywhere are talking about new ways to keep kids safe while trick-or-treating this year. Medefile.com, a web-based company that allows people everywhere to collect, organize and store their medical records online, launches the “MedeDrive Bracelet” just in time for Halloween.
Children can seldom speak for themselves in emergency situations and they usually cannot provide accurate medical information that is relevant to the emergency. The MedeDrive Bracelet contains your child’s emergency information (allergies, medications, blood type, etc.), medical and family contact information. In any type of emergency, this bracelet is easily recognized by law enforcement and medical personal.
“Most people think of Halloween as a time for fun and treats for children, but the fact is that Halloween-related injuries occur and often times end in tragedy,” said Kevin Hauser, CEO of Medefile.com.
"The MedeDrive Bracelet is a must for any child with a medical condition that emergency personnel should be aware of right away – like asthma, diabetes or serious drug/food allergies. If your children are out unaccompanied you would want them to receive proper care in the case of an emergency. A Medefile Bracelet can save a life."
Medefile.com’s primary mission is to provide individuals with the ability to have complete and secure access to their entire actual medical record 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from virtually anywhere in the world.
About MedeFile International, Inc.
Headquartered in South Florida, MedeFile has a proprietary system for gathering and digitizing medical records so that individuals can have a comprehensive record of all of their medical visits. MedeFile's primary product is the MedeFile system, a highly secure system for gathering and maintaining medical records. The MedeFile system is designed to gather all of its members' actual medical records and create a single, comprehensive medical record that is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For more information about MedeFile and its annual subscription-based programs, please visit http://www.medefile.com/.

The Three-Legged Kitten - Review
A small, skinny kitten is tossed out of a speeding car, landing in an old junk yard. She is scared and in pain from her many injuries. She limps under a pile of old tires where she soon falls asleep.
The next day the kitten reluctantly makes her way into the building where the owner feeds her some tuna. However, his busy schedule soon leads him back to work.
What will become of this abandoned kitten? Will she find some loving souls to help? Find out in The Three-Legged Kitten by Samuel Lopez.
This is a wonderful book about courage and dedication. Samuel Lopez is not only the author and illustrator of The Three-Legged Kitten, he's also the owner of the Compassionate Pet Sanctuary. It's Pet Week
To kick off pet week I have a 3 part review of some very special and long overdue books. Nito's books (Nito's Tale, Nito Meets Chloe and Nito and Chloe Get an Invitation) are based on a true story of an assistance dog living in the west.
Nito is the smallest puppy in his litter, but despite his tiny size he's choosen over his brothers and sisters. But little does Nito know, he's being taken in for a very special purpose - Nito will be an assistance dog and soon learns all that entails.
Nito's Tale is a wonderful little book that's written in verse and from Nito's point of view. A great addition to any child's library. I give it 5 paws up!
Did you know...?
According to national statistics, 19 percent of the U.S. population is defined as disabled? This includes the;
- aging
- ill
- vision and hearing impaired
- physically disabled
- mentally disabled
Nito's Tale is available at Amazon.com

How Advertisers Manipulate Children
By Dr. Dolgoff
I was shocked the first time my daughter parroted a TV commercial back to me; she was two and a half! I was amazed that the marketing was able to hit its mark and make an impression on such a young child. Here I was, unsuccessfully trying to get her to remember the ABC song, yet Kellogg’s had no problem getting her to both sing and quote their commercial. It was shocking.
A study from Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity found that the least healthy breakfast cereals are the most aggressively marketed cereals. The study also showed that cereal companies are purposely targeting children (as young as age 2) with these commercials.
Many companies are also using online marketing in the form of cereal websites and “advergames”. For example, General Mills’ Websites Millsberry.com averages 767,000 unique young visitors a month; each visitor remains on the website for about 24 minutes each visit.
General Mills has the distinction of marketing to kids more than any of its competitors. Six of the 10 least healthy cereals advertised to kids are from General Mills!
How do companies decide which cereals to market to our kids? It seems that they simply choose the least healthy cereals and make them “kid” cereals. This study showed that cereals marketed to kids have 85% more sugar, 65% less fiber, and 60% more sodium than cereals marketed to adults.
Cereal companies spend nearly $156 million annually on kid-friendly TV commercials for kids. Why do companies spend so much money on child targeted advertising? Because it works! These commercials prompt our kids to crave these unhealthy items. And with the average child seeing 40,000 commercials a year, mostly for high-fat, high-calorie foods, that’s a lot of cravings!
When was the last time you remember seeing a commercial for a fruit or a vegetable? These healthy foods are rarely promoted on TV because they are not branded items and don’t turn out the same profits.
What can parents do to protect their kids? As always, it starts with communication. Sit down with your child and talk about the commercials. Explain to your kids that the purpose of the commercial is to get them to spend money. Ask them if they think there might be some important information that the advertiser is leaving out. “Do you think this is a healthy cereal? Why do you think the commercial doesn’t mention anything about how much sugar is in this cereal? Can you think of other cereals that are healthier?”
You can also discuss the use of cartoon characters. “Why do you think the company chose a cartoon bear to sell this cereal? Does it have anything to do with the cereal or is it just a way to get kids to watch the commercial?”
Most kids, even the younger ones, can be taught to see commercials for what they truly are.
The most successful way to avoid this problem, however, is to limit the amount of time your children spend watching television and playing computer and video games. Companies are even starting to advertise there, as well. It is possible that as your child is playing a beloved game, an advertisement is flashing before his eyes. So limit the exposure to this “noise”.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends fewer than 2 hours of TV and computer/video games per day. Parents seem to believe that their children will not agree to these limits but elementary and middle school children can usually be persuaded to cut down on TV, especially when parents give them ideas for other fun activities to do instead. Sit down with your child and brainstorm all the fun things they can do that don’t involve electronics.
Food companies and advertising executives spend large amounts of time and money trying to control your child’s cravings. Fight back with communication, education, and redirection. Parents can (and should) be the ones with the most influence over their young children.
